Dental veneers are one of the easiest ways to achieve a dazzling, celebrity smile while keeping all of your real teeth. Located in American Fork, UT, Murdock & Searle is proud to be the best cosmetic dentist in our area, performing complete smile makeovers with porcelain veneers.
One of the biggest advancements in cosmetic dentistry in recent decades, porcelain veneers transform the look of your smile, without requiring any major reconstructive work. The result is a gorgeous, natural looking restoration that will last a decade or longer before needing replacement.
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin, tooth-colored porcelain caps which are fitted over your existing teeth to fix their cosmetic appearance. These wafer-thin, custom-made pieces are bonded to the front of your tooth to change the tooth’s shape, color, size, or length.
Porcelain veneers are indistinguishable from normal teeth and durable and strong enough that you can care for them just as you would your regular teeth. Veneers offer a stronger, more attractive alternative to crowns and dental bonding without requiring much of the tooth’s enamel to be removed.
Porcelain veneers enhance the aesthetic value of your smile tremendously, though they also fix minor structural issues such as gaps in your smile and chipped teeth.
Reasons for porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers can fix a number of aesthetic issues with your teeth:
- Discolored (badly stained) teeth
- Worn-down teeth
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Bite-related problems
- Gaps between your teeth
How we apply veneers
It takes a couple weeks for veneers to come in after you are initially fitted for them. Once we receive your new veneers, applying them is relatively quick and painless.
Before we apply your custom veneer, we must firstnumb the surrounding area remove a tiny amount of tooth enamel (usually only about 1/2 millimeter) to create room for the veneer to fit in your mouth.
We then place a strong resin between the tooth and the veneer, and harden it using a special curling light.
It’s as simple as that! You should feel very little discomfort following the procedure, but we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment a couple weeks out just to make sure everything looks and feels great.
Advantages of porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers offer several advantages over alternatives like dental bonding and crowns:
- Porcelain veneers look like natural teeth (porcelain has light-reflecting properties that mimic those of natural teeth)
- Porcelain veneers resist stains from coffee, tea, cigarettes, red wine, etc.
- Veneers do not require extensive reshaping of the tooth underneath
- Veneers do not require special maintenance
- Veneers are a strong, durable solution meant to last many years
Veneers are an ideal option for when your smile requires extensive cosmetic work. For just one or two problematic teeth, dental bonding might represent a more affordable alternative.
Another way to look at a veneer is as an intermediate option between dental bonding and a crown.
